Who we are
First Bridge is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that was established in 2019 to address the growing physiological, emotional, social, and educational needs of children and families in the community of Petal. We work in collaboration with the Petal School District to serve children and their families by providing assistance with school uniforms, food, and other resources. We strive to enhance the quality of life for children and their families by aiming to reduce poverty, connect resources, reform social relationships, and cultivate hope.
Mission Statement
The mission of First Bridge is to connect people with resources, relationships, and the hope of the Gospel.
Our Beginning
Though established in 2019, the vision for First Bridge began in 2015 when Petal First Baptist Church assumed responsibility for weekend food backpacks from a high school student. While delivering food backpacks to Petal Primary students, Pastor Brad Eubank noticed one little boy wearing a pair of girl's shoes three sizes too big for his feet. One shoe was missing the tongue, and one broken shoelace was used to secure the shoes on his feet. Pastor Brad immediately went to Walmart to buy this little boy a brand-new pair of tennis shoes.
Providing the student with a brand-new pair of tennis shoes dramatically changed this little boy's life – bringing him out of despair and into a life of hope at home, at school, and with his peers. Because of this student's shoes, Pastor Brad, along with multiple church members, became aware of the profound need for physical and emotional resources for children and families in Petal, Mississippi beyond the current food provisions. This one little boy turned into hundreds of children with similar stories, such as going to school in their parent's underwear, or simply without, or wearing the same uniform for weeks at a time without it being laundered. After realizing the extent of the needs of the community, multiple church members gathered together to develop a plan to serve children and families and meet their needs in a more substantial way. |
